KAM ( Keyboard Access Menu )
About:
Everything in Windows is moving toward a GUI mouse or touch screen interface.
It used to be that you could access things with a few key strokes.
With Windows 11, they did away with the ability to create a menu on the taskbar.
This program allows you to open programs, websites or documents, with just a few
keystrokes, which you assign.
KAM will terminate when it opens another file or program.
Security:
Windows 11 identifies KAM as a trojan, because it opens other programs,
websites or documents. To run this program in Win11, it must be placed in a
folder exempted from the Defender anti-virus program. The programs opened by
KAM inherit its security level. KAM is not programmed to run as administrator.
Programming KAM to run as administrator brings up the UAC prompt when you run
it, asking if you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer.
That is annoying. To open a program that needs administrator level, you have
to run KAM as administrator. I have KAM on the taskbar running normally.
I also have a separate KAM shortcut. That opens it as administrator, so it
can open programs which require it.
Details:
KAM will create a folder in Documents, called "K-A-M". For greatest ease of use,
create that folder yourself. Exempt that folder from virus scans, and place KAM
in that folder. That will allow you to have everything in one place.
KAM is essentially a portable program. That is, it does not make any changes to
the OS Registry and does not require installation. It doesn't do anything at all,
except act as a keyboard menu. It has no other capacity.
Notes:
In version 3.3, the default is to look for .EXE and .LNK files when assigning keys.
You can type a wildcard into the file explorer to find other files, such as
*.TXT or *.DOCX. Web pages are a bit more trouble, since they require a different
interface. For them, at this time, you have to select a dummy file, then edit the
menu_kam.txt file. Replace the dummy file name with the web page URL.
It is simple, but awkward. It may be addressed in a future update.
Since it is a very small 32-bit program, and uses simple string arrays for menus,
it has a large capacity. Multiple menu levels are a basic design function.
In addition to the menus, it also saves screen position and color preferences.
You can have it open where you want it to open, and program all the colors to
your preference. A copy of this text is in the .zip file, kam-v33.zip.
PowerBASIC:
KAM is programmed in PowerBASIC for Windows, version 10.
Because of that, it is very small, and very fast.
